DocuClub is Arts Engine’s film screening series of works-in-progress documentaries. Every month at DocuClub a filmmaker presents a rough cut of his or her film to DocuClub members and the public, which is followed by a facilitated discussion. Past films have included Born Into Brothels (Academy Award for Best Documentary, 2004) and other major independent films.

If your film is between 45 and 95 minutes, in the rough cut stage, and has specific challenges you would like to workshop, please mail a clearly labeled DVD screener to the address below. (Your screener will not be returned unless you provide a SASE.)

Brendon McQueen, Reach Film Fellow 08/09

Congratulations to Brendon McQueen 08/09 Reach Film Fellow whose film Skip Rocks will screen at the 2009 Sun Valley Spiritual Film Festival , taking place September 18th-20th in Sun Valley, Idaho.

This year will be the 5th Annual Sun Valley Spiritual Festival, whose mission is to “present films that explore spiritual traditions from around the world, as well as films that cherish the human spirit.” Brendon’s film certainly falls under this category, chronicling an elderly woman at the onset of Alzheimer’s sharing a childhood memory with her granddaughter. View the trailer here.

Passes to the festival can be purchased for $80 and the price for individual screenings is just $8. You can buy tickets here.

This year IFP’s Independent Filmmaker Conference will run from September 19 – 23  in New York City. This five-day event consists of a packed schedule of panel discussions, networking opportunities and screenings offering  insight into the latest trends in the art and business of independent filmmaking. This conference is a must-attend event, especially for emerging artists.

Each day of the conference takes on a specific theme, from “Making Your First Feature” to “The Global Marketplace,” and features five or six corresponding panels throughout the day. Pioneering independent filmmakers and industry leaders sit on each panel.

Most of the panels take place at Haft & Murphy at FIT in Midtown Manhattan, running from 10 am to 5:30 pm or 8 pm. See conference schedule and purchase passes (for whole conference or individual days) if interested.

This conference is not only a great opportunity for a comprehensive and current look at independent filmmaking but also a networking opportunity. Over 2,000 top executives, filmmakers, producers, students, distributors and new media experts attend.

Michael Palmieri’s & Donal Mosher’s OCTOBER COUNTRY screens in the “Filmmaker of the Present Competition” at the 2009 Locarno Film Festival on August 9, 10, 11.

Geographically located at the crossroads of three major regions of Switzerland, with an audience that reflects these three major European cultures (Italian, German and French), the Locarno Festival has made an asset of its special situation. Every August, around 180,000 cinema-goers, 1,100 journalists, and 3,400 professionals converge on the small Swiss-Italian town of Locarno.

How do you sell a documentary? In this workshop/competition, five preselected emerging nonfiction filmmakers will pitch their ideas to a panel of distinguished documentary producers. The producers will give them feedback on their concept as well as their presentation skills—great lessons for all aspiring filmmakers. The winner will receive a $5,000 grant, sponsored by SnagFilms, to be used toward the completion of the pitched film.

Selection: Based on the criteria of persuasiveness of the pitch, originality of the vision, and viability of the project, the panel will select one finalist as the winner of a $5,000 grant to be used toward the finalist’s completion of the documentary pitched at the workshop. The decision of the panel will be final and binding.

Entry Deadline: September 25, 2009.
This workshop takes place on October 17, 2009.

This past weekend marked the fifth year of the annual festival, which was founded by Michael Moore with the aim of bringing high-quality films to “entertain and enlighten the audience.”
Leading up to this award, Entre Nos received an honorable mention at the Tribeca Film Festival and the Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature at the Newport International Film Festival.
