About the Film:
Marmato is a documentary feature about an artisan gold-mining village in rural Colombia on the precipice of opportunity and destruction as a Canadian mining company plans a massive regional investment. For five centuries these miners have lived in the lush Andes Mountains; the gold being their only source of sustenance. This intimate portrait follows the lives of the villagers as they struggle to preserve their centuries old way of life and confront the arrival of large-scale mining operations.
About the Filmmakers:
Mark Grieco is an independent filmmaker interested in human rights in the global economy. He has spent many years in Latin America producing photography and documentaries. Marmato is his first feature film. Mark Achbar is the director of the award winning films, The Corporation and Manufacturing Consent. Stuart Reid is a creative producer with nearly a decade of experience working for some of North America’s largest media companies. Izabel Hoyos is an independent producer committed to using film as a tool for activism and has led various outreach campaigns.
