These resources are meant to assist filmmakers making and distributing short films.  Our lists are by no means exhaustive, and some resources listed may become out of date. These pages will continue to evolve over time. We welcome your suggestions and corrections.

Distribution & Exhibition

Apollo Cinema – A short film distribution company seeking quality films of all types and genres. Apollo sells to television stations (broadcast, cable, pay-per-view, and satellite), internet sites, airlines, theaters, military bases, home video and DVD.

Babelgum Online Film Festival – The “Looking for Genius Award” is geared specifically towards new filmmakers. There are also awards for animation short, 20 min narrative, 5 min short, and 30 min documentary.

Backdrop NYC – NYC TV broadcasts short films up to 25 minutes in length and accepts submissions for their “Backdrop NYC” program. NYC TV refers to Backdrop as “the premiere showcase of short films! Demonstrating the depth and breadth of independent film community, the shorts range in style from animation to live action to documentary – always of New Yorkers, by New Yorkers, for New Yorkers.”

CreateSpace – Provides distribution of movies on Demand, as well as video downloads through Amazon Video On Demand™. Through CreateSpace, artists can make their work available to millions of customers worldwide by selling on Amazon.com and through their own website with a customized eStore.

EZTakes – Offers downloadable movies that consumers can easily burn to DVD. If you own the copyright to a movie and are interested in selling them as downloadable movies, EZTakes can enable you to easily and quickly make more money from your catalog.

Film Festivals for Student Filmmakers - a list of student film friendly fests, hosted on the Rhode Island International Film Festival web site.

HungryFlix – Is a distributor of independent media including feature films, short films, documentaries and more, and provides downloads to various platforms. Makers are welcome to share and sell their work through the website.

Independent Exposure - A Worldwide Showcase of International Short Films, Videos, and Digital Works curated by Microcinema International and Bill Plympton. Open for submissions in April each year (entrance fee $5), seeking narrative, artistic, humorous, dramatic, animation, documentary, experimental, alternative, avant-garde, ambient, music videos, and underground works of all genres, formats, and styles.

Magnolia Pictures – distributor of Academy Award Nominated short films on DVD and other venues.

Media That Matters Film Festival – The Media That Matters Film Festival is the premiere showcase for short films on the most important topics of the day. Every June, MTM presents a new collection of twelve shorts. The festival launches in New York City with a World Premiere at the IFC Center and an Awards Ceremony at HBO where every filmmaker is honored and many receive cash awards sponsored by major foundations and corporations. Previous presenters include Tim Robbins, Al Franken, David Cross, Woody Harrelson, Barbara Kopple and Peter Yarrow. The festival launch also includes the Media as a Tool for Social Change Workshop, a unique convening of filmmakers, educators, activists, nonprofits and youth.

The June launch events are just the beginning of a jam-packed year of MTM. The films stream online in their entirety, broadcast nationally and are distributed on DVD to educators and activists. MTM reaches thousands through community screenings around the country. From classrooms to board rooms, movie theatres to home theatres, hundreds of events take place throughout the year. Microcinema International – “a leading international rights manager, exhibitor, and specialty markets distributor of the ‘moving image arts.’ Microcinema International specializes in the acquisition, exhibition, and distribution of independently produced works of an artistic and socially-relevant nature. Our mission is to seek out, curate, exhibit, promote, and distribute compelling works to a broad audience via existing and emerging mediums. This mission is realized through exhibition-based events, web-based platforms, educational outreach, modern marketing techniques, and digital and physical distribution.”

New York Times – According to about.com, The New York Times has launched a new initiative for documentary filmmakers to create short videos for the NYT website to serve as a “visual equivalent of Op Ed pieces.” These shorts should bring an innovative and informative perspective on timely issues and can take on a variety of different styles (verité, archival, animation).

Ouat! Media – A global media distribution specialist and provider of short film content for broadcast, internet, mobile devices, and all other newly-developed media.

Si-Mi – is a digital media platform for users to upload, share and sell their content. All content can be voted on by the Si-Mi community in a social networking environment and the most popular content is promoted to the front page for millions of visitors to see (and buy!).

World Wide Short Film Festival – Run through the Canadian Film Center, this fest screens 250 shorts yearly and awards $125,000 in prizes over six days in mid-June in Toronto. It is also an extensive marketplace (both digital and non) for thousands of shorts for sale. It’s symposium, “Short Film, Big Ideas” includes panels on distribution and festival strategy for short filmmakers, among other helpful topics.
